George Jones Wife Nancy Sepulvado Saved Him
George Jones wife Nancy Sepulvado is his fourth partner. She is known as the one who saved Jones from his addiction issues..
Jones was infamous for substance abuse, and drinking habits, due to which his relationship with his previous wives did not work out. His career and health were on a steep decline during the 70s.
However, when he met Nancy all of that changed for the better. The pair met back in November 1981 on a blind date. Like Jones, Nancy was also a divorcee when they met.
While it was not love at first sight, the two grew on each other. Nancy wanted to help Jones because he was a good man.
Nancy mentioned in an interview, “God told me, ‘If you leave him, he’s going to die.’ And I said, ‘You know what, you’re too good of a man to let go to hell and I’m not gonna let you do it.” Even though she knew that she might not be able to help him, she did everything she could, and she succeeded.
According to The Boot, she did what friends, family, doctors, therapists, and ministers could not do. She made a difference in his life and turned it around for the better.
The two got married in 1983, 2 years after they met.
George wrote in his biography: "No teenage boy ever fell harder for a girl than I fell for Nancy Sepulvado.” He gives her complete credit for saving his life, and soul.
He became sober for the first time since the 70s and performed in a show in 1984. He was sober for most of the 80s after he met Nancy.
The turning point for him was when he was in a car accident due to drunk driving on March 6, 1999, and had to be hospitalized for two weeks at Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC). Since then, he stopped drinking and using drugs.
He was sober till he died from hypoxic respiratory failure at 81 years of age, in VUMC. After his death, his song, "He Stopped Loving Her Today" became one of the most famous songs of that time again. At his grave, Nancy installed a monument that read, "He Stopped Loving Her Today."
