Letitia James is an American lawyer, activist, political member of the Democratic Party, and Attorney General of New York.
She is the first African-American woman to be elected and successfully won the 2018 election by appointed Attorney General Barbara Underwood.
Before that, she served as a New York City Council member from 2004 to 2013, representing the 35th district and chaired the Economic Development and Sanitation Committees.
She later became a Public Advocate in New York City from 2013 to 2018.
As a public advocate, she became the first American-African woman to be elected and hold citywide office in New York City.
James was a nominee in the 2022 New York gubernatorial election. She declared her candidacy on October 29, 2021.
Her Campaign was suspended on December 9, 2021, choosing instead to run for re-election as Attorney General.
