In 1998, he began as an attorney specializing in juvenile law and appellate practice at the Los Angeles County Counsel's Office.

He was then promoted to Senior Associate Country Counsel. 

Goodman then became Deputy Country Counsel. He served as lead counsel and supervised certified UCLA law students in the California Court of Appeal.

He was awarded the UCLA School of Law's Rutter Award for Excellence in Teaching. He was also elected as the UCLA School of Law Professor of the year from 2010 to 2015.
