Though Coney's great-great-grandparents were from France, they converted their nationality after migrating to New Orleans in the United States. The American jurist, born in 1972, is the daughter of Linda (nee Vath) and Michael Coney.

Being the eldest child, she has to look after her five sisters and a brother. As per the report, her father, Michael, worked as an attorney for Shell Oil Company. Amy's mother, a high school French teacher, is a homemaker. 

After attending high school at St. Mary's Dominican High School, an all-girls Roman Catholic high school in New Orleans, she joined Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee, with a major in English literature and a minor in French. 

Barrett, with fluent French, graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor of Arts Magna cun Laude and incubated into Omnicron Delta Kappa and Phi Beta Kappa. As an outstanding English department graduate, she attended Notre Dame Law School on a full-tuition scholarship. 

Amy, then executive editor of the Notre Dame Law Review, graduated in 1997, ranking in her class with a Juris Doctor summa cum laude.

Jessee M.Barrett, the husband of Amy, a fellow Notre Dame Law School graduate, is a partner at Southbank Legal- LaDue Curran & Kuehn LLC, in South Bend, Indiana. Two of their seven children, who were adopted from Haiti in 2005 and 2010 amid an earthquake, belong to Mr. and Mrs. Barrette, who were married in 1999 and reside in South Bend.

The youngest child, the biological one, has Down syndrome, a genetic disorder caused by the presence of a partial or all third copies of chromosome 21, associated with physical growth and moderated intellectual disability.

Her family, Christian, is a member of the Christian parachurch community People of Praise in South bend. Opposing abortion, Amy signed an advertisement placed by St. Joseph County Right to Life, an anti-abortion group in South Bend, Indiana newspaper.

Her family, with its diverse form, is the best example of unity and harmony. The couple has four daughters and three sons.
