Adnan Syed is an American man who is convicted for the murder of his ex-girlfriend, Hae Min Lee.

Hae Min Lee was a Korean-American high school student who was last seen alive on January 13, 1999, in Baltimore County, Maryland.

Adnan came into the limelight after the death of his classmate, Hae Min Lee, in February 1999. His friend told the police that Syed expressed the intent to kill her and even helped him to bury her body.

Adnan was convicted of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life in prison, plus 30 years. 

The podcast Serial covered the killing, which renewed attention to the case in 2014. Judge Martin P. Welch ordered a new trial in 2016 overturned in 2019.

Adnan Syed Was Convicted of First- Degree Murder

Adnan Syed murdered his high school girlfriend, Hae Min Lee, in 1999.

Her body was found in Leakin Parks by a passerby on February 9. Police began to search for the person n who reported the body.

The Baltimore City Police received an anonymous phone call on February 12, which suggested that the investigation should be focused on her ex-boyfriend, Adnan Syed.

One of Adnan's friends told police Syed intended to murder her. He also stated that he helped him to bury Lee's body after Syed confessed he killed her on January 13.

The police applied for cellular phone records for Syed on February 16. Then on February 28, he was attested and charged with first-degree murder. 

Adnan Syed was sentenced to 30 years in prison for the action.

Hae Min Lee was born in 1980 in South Korea. 

She emigrated to the United States with her mother, Youn Kim, and bothers Young Lee in 1992 to live with her grandparents.

She then attended the Woodlawn High School for magnet program in 1992. She was also an athlete who played lacrosse and field hockey.

Lee was then in a relationship with Syed during her high school period. 

]She then was diapered on January 13, 1999. Lee failed to pick up her younger cousin from daycare around 3:15 pm. Her family reported her missing. She was last seen at her high school, Woodlawn High School.

The police immediately started the investigation and reached out to her former boyfriend. Syed said the last time he saw her was when the class ended.

On February 6, police conducted a dog-led search around the Woodlawn High School.

Adnan Syed's Family After He Was Convicted

Adnan Syed was convicted of the first-degree murder of Hae Lee in 2000.

His family never believed he was guilty. The conviction tore them apart in many more ways than one. But her mother remained steadfast and stoic, even going as far as discussing the case publically when a serial broke out.

Adnan's arrest has a significant effect on his brothers too. His brother said that his brother was arrested based on so little evidence. He blamed Syed's friend, Jay.

His brother, Tanveer, left his family behind after he was arrested. Tanveer blamed Adnan for ruining his life. He then moved to Philadelphia and was estranged from all the family.

Later, the podcast was made, but his family didn't make an appearance but did show up in the docu-series. His conviction takes a serve emotional toll on his family.

Adnan Syed's Conviction Overturned on September 19, 2022

The Judge overturned his conviction for the death of Hae Min Lee on Monday.

After multiple attempts, he was released, saying a lengthy investigation conducted with the defense had uncovered new evidence.

The whole timeline:

Adnan Syed appealed his conviction in 2003, which was unsuccessful. Later in 2010, he pleaded for post-conviction relief based on the practical assistance of counsel.

The appeal was declined in 2014.

On February 6, 2015, the Maryland Court approved his application. In May, the court remanded the case to the Circuit Court for Baltimore City.

His lawyer filed a motion on August 24, 2015, stating that n newly recovered document showed that the cell tower evidence used was misleading.

On November 5, 2015, Baltimore Court ordered that Syed's post-conviction relief proceeding be re-opened. The conviction, initially scheduled for two days, lasted five days.

A lower court ordered a retrial of Syed on the ground that his attorney, Cristina Gutierrez, didn't contact an alibi witness and provided ineffective counsel in 2016.

Maryland's highest court denied a new trial in a 4-3 ruling in 2019 after a series of appeals. The Maryland Court agreed with the lower court that his legal counsel was deficient in failing to investigate an alibi witness.

The court said Syed waived his ineffective counsel claim. The US Supreme declined to review his case in 2019. 

Later in 2022, Judge Melissa Phinn said that the state violated its legal obligation to share exculpatory evidence with his defense.

Becky Feldman described various details from the case to Judge Phinn, including flawed cell phone data, unreliable witness testimony, and a potentially biased detective.

The investigation also revealed newly developed information regarding two alternative suspects. The prosecutors said they weren't adequately ruled out nor disclosed to the defense.

Now, Adnan Syed's shackles were taken off in Court on Monday, nearly after 23 years behind bars.

Judge Phinn ordered Syed to be placed at home on Monday.

He will be intentioned with GPS location monitoring. She also said that the state must decide whether to seek a new trial date or dismiss the case within 30 days.

After hearing the statement, attorney Merilyn said investigators were waiting for the result of DNA analysis before determining theater to seek a new trial date or throw the case away.

Now, the whole case id depends upon the DNA, which defines whether the case should be continued or Adnan Syed can be declared innocent.
