Evan McMullin was born on April 2, 1976, in Provo, Utah, U.S., the eldest of his parents of four children, David McMullin and Lani Bullard.
When Evan was young, his family migrated to a rural area outside Seattle, Washington. McMullin's Father worked as a computer scientist; his mother used to sell wholesale foods to neighbors from the family's garage.
In 1994, after graduating from Auburn Senior High School, McMullin served as a missionary of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for two years in Brazil. After returning, he spent the summer working on an Alaskan fishing vessel.

McMullin was elected a senior adviser on national security affairs to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs for the 113th Congress in 2013.
In 2015, McMullin became chief policy director of the House Republican Conference under Speaker Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Wash.).
From this position, he watched the 2016 Republican primaries, and when he began speaking out against Trump, he was an impulse by some Republicans to stay out of the field.
McMullin resigned as chief policy director in August 2016 before announcing his run for president.
