Eric Abetz is an Australian politician. He served as a Senator of Tasmania from 1994 to 2022. He represents the Liberal Party.

Eric was born on 25 January 1958 in West Germany, Baden-Wurttemberg, and emigrated to Australia with his father as a small kid. His father came to Tasmania to work in Hydro Electric Commission.

Professionally he is a Lawyer and graduated from the University of Tasmania. Eric spent only three years in Germany and went to Australia in 1961.

Eric was a barrister and solicitor before entering politics. From 1990 to 1994, he was state president of the Tasmanian Liberal and former national president of the Australian Liberal Students' Federation.

Eric is one of the successful leaders in Australia. He was the minister for employment and the leader of the government in the senate in the Abbott Government from 2013 to 2015.

Eric Abetz was the youngest child of his parent. His family emigrated from Germany to Australia in 1961. In 1974 they became citizens of Australia.

His father's name is Walter Abetz. He was a radio technician who lost a leg fighting with the German army on the Russian front, the eastern front of world war II.

The war was a theatre of conflict between the European Axis powers against the Soviet Union.

Walter Abetz's coming to Australia advertised the skilled workers for Tasmania's Hydro Electric Commission in Germany Newspaper. He applied and came to Australia to work with his family.

Peter Abetz, One of Eric's bother, was the Liberal member for Sothern River from 2008 to 2017 in the Legislative Assembly of Western Australia.

Eric's grandfather Karl Abetz was a professor of forestry science. Karl joined the Nazi Party and National Socialist German Workers' Party in 1933.

He then became a general consultant of the Reich Forestry Office in 1942.

Otto Abetz, Eric's great uncle, was a Nazi SS officer in German ambassador to Vichy France, a convicted war criminal.

The Australian Monarchist League announced Abetz as Campaign Director of the Vote No Republic campaign on 31 August 2022.

Eric Abetz Wife, Michelle Abetz And Children

Eric Abetz married Michelle Oates in 1991, and they have three children. Michelle, Eric's wife, died in 2019 of cancer, and she has been suffering since 2015.

 Abetz is Christian, and after Michelle died, Eric said the Christian faith had sustained them during this period. They thank the Christian community around Australia for their prayerful support. He thanked the media for keeping his privacy at difficult times.

Eric Abetz is an Australian Politician and Senator for Tasmania

Eric started his political career in 1984 as a candidate for the Senate. But he was active during his degree at the University of Tasmania.

Abetz studied at Taroona High school, Hobart Matriculation College. He then got enrolled in the Univeristy of Tasmania.

And from the University of Tasmania, he won a degree in law and arts in 1981. He served as president of the University of Tasmania Liberal Club.

He served as the national president of the Australian Liberal Students' Federation from 1980 to 1981. He was the first Tasmanian to be national president.

He came into political conflict with Nick Sherry and Sue Mackay during that time.

In the 1984 and 1993 elections, he won Preselection as a candidate for the Senate but did not win the seat. Later in 1994, he filled a casual Vacancy after Brian Archer's resignation and was elected to the Senate of Tasmania.

From 1994 to 2022, he was reelected three times continuously in 2004, 2010, and 2016.
