Who Is Joe Manchin's Wife Gayle Conelly Manchin?
Joe Manchin is married to Gayle Conelly Manchin, an educator and former West Virginia official. She served as the First Lady of West Virginia from 2005 until 2010.
On May 6, 2021, Conelly was sworn in as the thirteenth federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission, making history as the first co-chair from West Virginia. President Biden nominated her and collaborates closely with a network of local development districts, the 13 member governors of ARC, their state alternates, and program managers.
Manchin formerly held the positions of President of the West Virginia Board of Education from 2013 to 2014 and West Virginia Secretary of Education and the Arts from 2017 until her resignation in March 2018. She was a teacher in the Marion County Public School District and served on the faculty of Fairmont State University, where she founded the university's first Community Service Learning Program.

She attended West Virginia University, oversaw AmeriCorps Promise Fellows in West Virginia, and launched a statewide effort called W.V. Partnerships to Assure Student Success between 2000 and 2004. Manchin was elected to the West Virginia Board of Education in 2007 and served on the board until 2015.
Gayle served a two-year term as the West Virginia Board of Education's president on July 10, 2013. Additionally, Manchin served on the U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) on April 19, 2018. She served as the board chair for Reconnecting McDowell, Inc., a rural West Virginia AFT initiative.
