Kristin cooper was born on July 19, 1956. She grew up in Oklahoma City with her three younger sisters.

Roy Cooper was born in Nashville, North Carolina, on June 13, 1957. Roy's mother was a school teacher, and his father was a lawyer.

When cooper was small, he attended public school and worked on his parent's tobacco farm during summer.

In 1975, he completed high school at Northern Nash High School and received the Morehead Scholarship for his undergraduate studies.

He was also part of Chi Psi Fraternity and elected the university's Young Democrats president.

In 1982, after Undergraduate, Roy earned a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law.

When Cooper was serving in the legislature, he also practiced law. He joined republicans and dissident democrats to upset speakers.

In 1991, Roy was appointed to serve the remainder of a term of a senator who had vacated his seat and elected majority leader of the State Senate.

He continuously practiced law in Rocky Mount and Nashville, North Carolina, as the managing partner of Fields & Cooper.

In November 2000, he defeated Republican lawyer Dan Boyce in the North Carolina attorney general election.

Again he was easily re-elected, defeating Bob Crumley in 2008. After the retirement of governor Bev Perdue, other members suggested him as a possible candidate for governor, but he declined to run.

For the first time, he ran for governor in the  2016 election against incumbent Republican Pat McCrory.

Mr. Cooper won the election on November 8, 2016, and was sworn into office on January 1, 2017.

In the 2020 North Carolina gubernatorial election, he defeated Republican nominee Lieutenant governor Dan forest by 4.4 points.

From 1991 to 2001, he was a North Carolina State Senate member and was selected as the Democratic senate majority leader.
