Mina (Schwartz), his paternal grandmother, was a Russian Jew born in Mexico City. His maternal grandfather was a Polish Jew who immigrated, and his maternal grandmother was born in Los Angeles to a family of Jewish immigrants.

Lerman has claimed that because he is an actor and most of his family members are doctors, he is the "black sheep" in his family. His great-grandfather began the orthotics and prosthetics business that his family owns and runs in 1915.
