Politician Jim Clyburn's wife, Emily England Clyburn, who played a crucial role in her husband's political career, passed away in 2019 at the age of eighty.  

Jim Clyburn in full James Enos Clyburn is a well-known politician and a retired educator. He served as a Democratic congressman from South Carolina in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Clyburn was the first South Carolinian and second African American to hold the position of majority whip. He has held the position of majority whip twice, from 2007 to 2011. From 2011 to 2019, he also held the position of assistant minority leader in the House.

Since 1993, Clyburn has represented South Carolina's 6th congressional district in the United States. Moreover, he is the dean of South Carolina's congressional delegation.

He has fought for rural and economic development as a national leader, and many of his ideas have been passed into law. His late wife, Emily England Clyburn, was his biggest supporter. 

Who Is Jim Clyburn's Wife, Emily Clyburn?


Jim's wife, Emily Clyburn, was known for many things, including her longtime career as a librarian and her philanthropy, especially to her alma mater and the Girl Scouts. She was born in Whitesville in Berkeley County to her father, Peter England, and her mother, Mattie England. 

She was raised alongside her siblings, Arthur England and Mattie Mae England Wadley. She completed her high school at Berkeley Training High School in Moncks Corner. Later in 1961, she earned a bachelor's in library science degree from South Carolina State.

Furthermore, in 1977, she received a Master's in Librarianship from the University of South Carolina. Many knew her affectionately as Ms. Emily or Dr. Em worked as a public school librarian in Columbia and Charleston before becoming a medical librarian at the Charleston Naval Base and the Dorn VA Medical Center in Columbia for 29 years.

Additionally, Emily was a member of the Morris Brown AME Church in Charleston and a life member of the NAACP. Jim and Emily were both devoted to their alma institution, providing funds to re-establish SCSU's Honors College and establishing the Dr. Emily England Clyburn Honors College Scholarship Endowment.

Her entire life, she was committed and worked for civil rights and access to education. Moreover, she was also a member of the South Carolina State University National Alumni Association and the Congressional Black Caucus Spouses Association.

South Carolina Representative Jim Clyburn Married Life

Jim and Emily had a blissfully married life as they had been married for fifty-eight years. The pair was a member of the SCSU class of 1961, where they first met.

They were both active in the Civil Rights Movement. They met in jail when they were arrested during campus activism in the 1960s.

They tied their knot in 1961 and have been together since then. Unfortunately, Emily died in 2019 at eighty in Columbia, South Carolina. However, the cause of her death has not been revealed. 

Being together for fifty-eight years was a colossal tragedy for Jim. The pair loved each other tremendously and were always supportive of each other. 

Jim Clyburn Daughters & Family

During the time of their marriage, the pair had three beautiful daughters. Their eldest, Mignon Clyburn, was appointed to the Federal Communications Commission by President Barack Obama.

Their second daughter, Jennifer Reed, is a businesswoman and retired schoolteacher. She serves as the Southeast Crescent Regional Commission's federal co-chair. 

Reed is the CEO of the Palmetto Issues Conference and a co-owner of the 49 Magnolia investment business.

Their younger daughter, Angela Clyburn, is currently forty-seven years old. Jim and Emily are grandparents of four grandkids and are blessed to have them in their life.

The famous politician Jim has a net worth of $2.5 million. He has worked hard and was able to earn his name and recognition for his hard work. He was elected to the United States House of Representatives to represent South Carolina's sixth congressional district in the early 1990s.
