Kay Ivey started her political career in the state cabinet in 1979. She was appointed by the former Governor of Alabama, Fob James.

Between 1980 and 1982, she served on the Alabama House of Representatives as the reading clerk.

Ivey also served as an Assistant Director in the Alabama Development Office from 1982 to 1985.

From 1985 through 1998, she served as the Alabama Commission on Higher Education's Director of Government Affairs and Communications.

Ivey belonged to Conservative Sothern Democratic before 2002 and changed her thought and political views. She joined the Republican party in 2002.

Just after one year of being in the Republic party, she got a chance to serve as Treasurer of Alabama in 2003 and did up to 2011. She was the 38th Treasurer of Alabama.

From January 17, 2011, to April 10, 2017, Ivey serves as the 30th Lieutenant Governor of Alabama. Robert Bentley was the Governor of that time.

After a long political struggle, she has been the Governor of Alabama since April 10, 2017. She is the 54th and second female Governor of Alabama.
